Have you seen vehicles on Bermuda’s roads with license plates beginning with “LP”? Their presence may intrigue you, leading to questions about their role or purpose.

The term “LP” stands for Light Private, indicating that this vehicle is designed for dual use: it can serve both commercial purposes within the light category and private needs. This type of permit makes it an excellent choice for small business owners who want to efficiently manage their daily operations while also having the flexibility to use the vehicle for personal activities.

Under TCD regulations, light (L) commercial vans are restricted from carrying passengers and are required to forgo a passenger seat in the back. However, the LP vehicle stands out as a practical solution for those looking to merge business and personal uses into one efficient vehicle.

Furthermore, one of the significant advantages of the LP vehicle is that it does not incur additional fees for a Sunday permit, a requirement that applies to other commercial vehicle types. This makes it not only a convenient option but also a cost-effective one for small business owners looking to optimize their expenses.

Please remember to license your vehicle, as the LP will need to reference your home assessment number, just like any private-use car. Ensure that no other vehicle is using your assessment number. The process for applying for the LP permit is similar to that of other commercial vehicles, which means you will need to:

  • Completely fill out the commercial vehicle application form.
  • Provide TCD with a copy of your company certificate.
  • Submit brochures or pictures of the new vehicle, which should include the manufacturer’s specifications and year, all on the dealership’s letterhead.
  • For second-hand vehicles purchased locally, include pictures of the vehicle along with the bill of sale and registration information.
  • Obtain a letter from the Department of Social Insurance reflecting the number of employees.
  • Secure a letter from the Tax Commissioner’s office.
  • Include a photo showing the total area where the vehicle will be stored when not in use.
  • Acquire a letter from your landlord granting permission to park a commercial vehicle on the property.
  • If you reside in a condominium, a letter from the Condo Association will be required.
  • Provide at least two business reference letters.
  • Include a customer/client list.
  • Attach any relevant contracts, if applicable.

Lastly, please ensure that the owner or employee of your business possesses a valid driver’s license.
